FareShare North West is the regional branch of a national charity committed to supporting communities to combat food poverty and food waste.
We offer a social solution to an environmental issue: coordinating the redistribution of quality surplus food from the food and drinks industry to a network of over 500 community organisations working with disadvantaged people across the UK.
FareShare was established as an independent charity in 2004 and currently operates at 12 locations around the UK. The North West regional branch was launched in October 2008 and is run by EMERGE: a social enterprise providing sustainable waste management services across Manchester.
FareShare’s current focus in the North West is on developing a network of suppliers to ensure a regular flow of goods into our warehouse, enabling us to offer a dependable source of food to the recipient organisations with which we work.
- 1/3 of all waste produced in the UK is generated by the food sector - that’s 17 million tonnes of food waste.
- 1/4 of this food waste is still fit for consumption
- The Food and Drinks Federation wants to prevent all food waste going into landfill by 2015, they are closely involved with FareShare too
- Over 4 million people in the UK cannot afford a healthy diet
- The food collected and redistributed by FareShare in 2007 contributed towards 4.6 million meals, reaching an average of 25,000 people each day
- 70% of recipient organisations made savings due to the food received from FareShare, and were able to redirect these savings to other support services
We are hoping to start food awareness classes in the near future, teaching local communities the importance of eating healthily and giving them the practical skills to be able to do it.
