Local Food Works
EMERGE has received funding from Manchester City Council's Carbon Innovation Fund and Manchester Markets to set up a Learning garden on New Smithfield Market to help equip East Manchester residents with the skills to grow their own vegetables. We’ve already put up a polytunnel and work continues on developing the garden to demonstrate what people can grow in the (often limited) spaces that they have available to them by using window boxes, containers and recycled materials.
Growing food in your own home or as part of a community group provides many benefits;
- The food that you produce is a lot cheaper than buying it in the shops
- It’s a great way to get exercise outdoors.
- It has a smaller impact on the environment than sourcing food from around the globe.
- If you are gardening as part of a group it's a great way to meet people & develop new skills.
- There’s not much that beats the satisfaction of growing vegetables from seed, or eating them!
